Silica

Silica (Si) is not considered an essential plant nutrient, but it should be in every plant magician's magic box. Silicon improves plants' ability to convert sunlight and carbon dioxide into carbohydrates through photosynthesis, which increases their growth and biomass. The substance also strengthens plants' outer tissues, making them more resistant to drought and wind, increases their resistance to fungal diseases such as powdery mildew, rust and leaf mold, and helps them defend themselves against attacks from aphids and spider mites.

Cucurbits (cucumbers, pumpkins, zucchini, squash and melons) that are fertilized with silicon require less water and produce more and less watery fruits. Tomatoes that are fertilized or foliar fertilized with silicon ripen fruits more quickly. The silicon that is not absorbed stays in the soil where it prevents plants from absorbing toxic substances such as arsenic and cadmium, and improves soil structure by facilitating aggregate formation. Silica occurs naturally in the majority of minerals in the soil, but can only be absorbed by plants in the form of silica dioxide ( Si O ₂). Decoctions of horsetail, Equisetum arvense , contain large amounts of silica (22% of dry weight) and can be either watered down or sprayed onto plant leaves. Another excellent source is fossilized diatoms, which consist of pure silica.

USE: Silica can be used throughout the entire growing cycle. Dose about 1 tablespoon of silica flour per liter of water (silica cannot be overdosed). For increased absorption, add 1 teaspoon of Natural Epsom Salt or 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate. Use as a liquid nutrient and water in, or transfer to a spray bottle and spray over the plants' leaves.
