Garden shears Toyama Hamono
Hand-forged Japanese garden shears
With secateurs you prune branches, with secateurs you cut everything else. In Japanese gardening culture, secateurs have a central position among garden tools and are used daily for all types of light pruning, grafting, trimming, pinching and shaping. Despite their elegant shape, they are a surprisingly powerful tool; the blades are very sharp and produce clean and precise cuts without crushing branches, twigs and stems – a clear advantage in a variety of contexts and particularly valuable when harvesting cut flowers. But that said, they are of course just as useful when harvesting or simply pruning woody herbs, spices and vegetables.
Each pair of scissors is forged and sharpened by hand, and the handle is colored by firing in a kiln – according to Japanese tradition and without chemicals or industrial dyes. The small, individual shades and variations that may appear on different pieces are nothing more than proof of true craftsmanship.
Toyama Hamono is a family-owned business in Sanjo, Niigata. The region has a long history of blacksmithing dating back to the Edo period, when the same techniques were used to forge samurai swords. Since 1861, Toyama Hamono has refined their craft and today their scissors, secateurs and knives are celebrated for their sharpness, durability and beauty.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Wipe the scissors after use and store them dry indoors. A drop of knife oil (or sewing machine oil) protects the steel from rust. If necessary, the blades can be sharpened with a whetstone. Since they are made of carbon steel, the scissors can rust if not cared for - so it is important to always clean, dry and oil them after use. We recommend the Tool care set from the same manufacturer.
